Attendance
Daily attendance is expected for students to reach their full academic potential. Additionally, children are required by law to attend school with few, documented exceptions. Overall, parents are required to ensure their children maintain a good attendance record.
Absences seriously affect the student's grades. Extended absences before and after vacations (i.e., leave) are strongly discouraged.
Plans to keep the student in school should be considered when making family plans. After 8:00 a.m., students are considered absent. It is the parent's responsibility to call the school at 419-691-4876 by 8:00 a.m. to report a child absent.
After three consecutive days of absence, a student must have a note from a medical doctor or any further absences will be counted as unexcused. However, a period of extended illness (i.e. chicken pox) may be considered a single absence for this requirement.
After 12 absences parents will be required to meet with the school leader and appropriate action will be taken. A parent who has a child with a chronic illness may have a medical doctor complete a form to keep on file at school. After review by school personnel, the form may exempt the parent/student from securing a doctor's statement each time the student is absent for that school year. Any combination of unexcused absences and tardies totaling 12 or more may be considered as a reason for retention.
Absences Counted as Present:
Religious observances
Illness, which results in hospitalization
Doctor or dental appointment not exceeding two hours, with prior notification given to the school office
Excused absences
Personal illness (a doctor's note is required after three consecutive days)
Serious illness in the immediate family
Death in the family
Head lice (one day only)
The child lacks proper immunizations (one day only)
Unexcused Absences
Head lice or a lack of proper immunization after the first day
Absences due to the lack of transportation
Acquiring three or more absences without a doctor's note
Vacations during instructional time
Tardiness
When a student is late to school, the student AND the parent must report to the school office to get a late pass. Parents are required to call the school office to inform the school of the child's late arrival. Children who arrive after 8:45 am must bring a packed lunch. Parents must understand that students will not get credit for activities taking place before a student arrives, and that tardiness may affect their grades. Multiple tardies may cause grade level failure.
Make Up Work
Students with excused absences are provided the opportunity to complete work upon their return. Students who are absent without an excuse will be permitted to make up work at the discretion of the teacher. The period for completing makeup work shall be the total number of days absent plus one. Students are responsible for obtaining makeup work upon the day they return to school. If a student becomes hospitalized or has an illness serious enough to keep him/her home for more than five days, the parents should call the office and arrange for assignments from teachers.
