Research has shown that students who do not read over the summer show a drop in reading skills the following September when they return to school (this is known as the "summer slide"). At Eagle Academy, our students have worked very hard to improve their reading skills all year long, and we do not want any of them to lose what they have achieved! We have partnered with the Toledo-Lucas County Library and other organizations to help promote reading for all of our students throughout the summer.
All Eagle Elementary students have revceived free books to take home for summer reading. In addition, they will each bring home a Summer Reading Folder/Packet. Most of the various reading programs included in the folder can be found at the links to the right. Eagle Secondary students are also welcome to participate in any of the programs (depending on age).
In additon, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is offering a summer reading club for all students (including teens) which begins on June 10. Students can visit their local branch to sign up (library cards are not required, but highly encouraged).
All Eagle Elementary students who return their Summer Reading Folders in August will receive Book Bucks to spend on prizes at the Eagle Library. We will also reward students who return their free summer reading books (this is recommended, but not required--we would like to reuse the books next summer if we can!).
Parents, please set aside time in the summer to read. We recommend a minimum of 100 minutes per week spent reading, which is less than 15 minutes per day. Students can read before they go to bed, while riding in the car, while waiting at appointments, after breakfast, or whenever works best for your family. They can read independently or read aloud to a younger family member. Summer reading should be FUN, so please allow your child(ren) to read whatever they are interested in (picture books, chapter books, magazines, newspapers, etc.). ALL kinds of reading will help your student become a better reader!
